Yaoi Press Changes Payment System

I know I don’t really have time to be writing this, but I want it out somewhere ASAP. I hope the regular bloggers and sites out there that report on my announcements will spread this around. It’s not really something I’d do a press release for.

Yaoi Press has paid a flat page rate for projects so far. All contracts going forward will be royalty contracts. Before you get scared or disgusted, let me reassure you that creators will get royalty advances based on the first printing of their books and on the SRP. Our current print runs are large enough that the advances work out to pretty close to the flat rate I was paying now. Much more for writers, a little less for artists, about the same for writer/artists. However, now creators get to see ongoing dividends to the success of their books/series. I’m hoping this will cause more creator promotion. This has definately been lacking in the past.

The percentages offered for writers, artists, or writer/artists will be the same for everyone. What will be different is the size of the first printing. I wish I could put some numbers here, but first printings are something of a trade secret. There will always be a certain minimum we print for every book that I feel results in a respectable royalty advance not too much less than the flat rate we used to offer. However, certain creators who have a track record with Yaoi Press automatically have much larger print runs because I know their sales history. It’s a simple business premise that I haven’t been following so far, but have to in the future:

Talent that sells more books will make more money.

Several Yaoi Press creators have kept some rights to their work. It’s a matter to be brought up during contract negotiations. Many creators have contracts similar to the one for your Yaoi Hentai story, where the right to resell the materials revert back to you after a certain time period. Others have clauses to keep the rights to their original characters/concepts. Others negotiate to keep the rights of certain languages. Several of our Copyright Registrations list the creators (in addition to Yaoi Press) and state in the ‘Nature of Authorship’ line just how the rights are split between them and Yaoi Press.
